Maximum Protection Against Corrosion by Using Zinc Anode Rods

Sir Humphrey Davy was credited for the first practical use of anodes for cathodic protection. In 1820, the Royal Navy had sought the help of Sir Humphrey Davy in finding a solution for preventing corrosion of copper sheeting used for cladding the hulls of naval vessels. With several experiments and studies, Davy found that corrosion of Copper sheeting could be controlled by attaching sacrificial anodes made of zinc or iron. Thereafter, experiments and studies have been conducted to enhance the performance and efficiency of sacrificial anodes.

Today, cathodic protection using sacrificial anode is considered as the most cost-effective solution to protect underground storage tank systems, pipelines, marine vessels and other partially of fully buried and submerged metallic structures. Amongst the commonly used anode rods, zinc anode rod has become highly popular and commonly used due to its features like:

Compared to magnesium and aluminum anodes, a zinc anode rod provides round-the-clock effective protection to metal parts of marine vessels in brackish and freshwater. Boat and huge vessel owners worldwide have been using zinc anodes to prevent the eating away of steel, copper, bronze etc. There are many reputed and experienced manufacturers, who design, manufacture and distribute zinc anode rods to attach in hulls, shafts, propellers, outdrives, engines etc. Manufacturers use extruded/pressure die casting method to manufacture zinc anodes of various sizes, shapes and dimensions. The method helps to gain maximum density in an anode without the formation of internal air pockets. These anodes are checked for their consistency of alloy combinations before being shipped to respective customers.

Some of the typical applications of zinc anode rods are:

Installation of zinc anode rods to the metal being protected is easy and simple. There is no need to hire an experienced technician to complete the installation process. However, it is recommended that you carefully read the installation manual of the respective manufacturer before using the anode rod in your application.
